Turkesterone

If you are an athlete interested in performance-enhancing substances, but don't necessarily want to engage in illegal doping, you can't get around Turkesterone: No other freely available supplement - except perhaps Creatine - has caused more furor in the fitness scene so far. What makes Turkesterone so interesting are two circumstances in particular: 1. the effectiveness of Turkesterone in terms of performance enhancement and muscle gain has been clearly proven by studies, and 2. Turkesterone is not yet on WADA's list of banned substances. (However, inclusion on the list is under discussion.) But why are there many critical voices about Turkesterone? Before you make your own experience with Turkesterone: Read here what the hype is based on!

Turkesterone: Natürliches Anabolikum aus Spinat

What is Turkesterone?

Turkesterone is an active ingredient extracted from the Ajuga plant (Ajuga Turkestanica). It was discovered as early as 1973 by a Soviet working group and was considered to be potentially ergogenic (= performance-enhancing). Today it is known that Turkesterone is an ecdysteroid. Ecdysteroids are natural steroid-like substances that can have a lasting effect on the metabolic processes of living organisms. They are found in numerous vegetable plants, including spinach. In insects and shellfish, they control molting - hence the name (ecdysis = ancient Greek "molting"). In mammals, they have a completely different effect: studies show that they stimulate protein synthesis and increase fat and carbohydrate metabolism. This effect can also be demonstrated in humans.

Effect of Turkesterone

After the discovery of ecdysteroids, research on these plant messengers was carried out in the Soviet Union for several years. It turned out that of the more than 200 different ecdysteroids, only two trigger an observable effect in humans: Turkesterone and Beta Ecdysterone. (Turkesterone is a hydroxylated derivative of ecdysterone, also called "20-hydroxyecdysone". For the sake of simplicity, however, we will refer hereafter only to "Turkesterone" on the one hand and to "Beta Ecdysterone" on the other). Both substances had a stimulating effect on protein biosynthesis and induced increases in strength in human studies. However, the exact mechanism could not be explained until today, because unlike crustaceans and insects, mammals and humans have no receptors for ecdysteroids at all. The positive effect must therefore be due to their degradation products rather than to the substances themselves.

In the 1980s, turkesterone and beta-ecdysterone preparations were used by both Soviet athletes and elite Soviet soldiers. Since it had proved difficult with the 80s laboratory technology had proved difficult to extract ecdysteroids from plants, ecdysterone was chemically "recreated" at that time. The corresponding preparation was called "mesobolin". Thanks to new extraction processes, it is now easier to extract active ingredients from plants, which is why numerous dietary supplements containing natural turkesterone are now on the market. Meanwhile, it is also known that Turkesterone extracted from plants has a stronger anabolic potency than synthetically produced Mesobolin.

Stronger than Dianabol?

How strong is the effect of Turkesterone exactly? There are different official reports here. Athletes' experiences with Turkesterone also give a mixed picture. In animal experiments with rats (1988: Chermnykh et al.), a build-up effect was achieved that was equal to that of the well-known anabolic agent metandienone (trade name: "Dianabol"). However, these experimental results are not directly transferable to humans. Recent studies (see below: Scientific findings on Turkesterone) show that the effect is actually weaker than the effect of metandienone, even weaker than the effect of prohormones and SARMs. Moreover, training plays an important role - unlike anabolic steroids, which have some building effect even without training. Nevertheless, Turkesterone or Ecdysterone can work in an impressive way.

Observed effects

  • Increased protein synthesis (muscle building)
  • Improved carbohydrate metabolism
  • Improved fat metabolism
  • Accelerated regeneration
  • Strengthening of the immune system
  • Improved liver function

Side effects of Turkesterone

Serious side effects are not known so far. Athletes who have taken more than 800 mg daily have reported only occasional gastrointestinal complaints. According to animal studies, a toxic effect occurs at the earliest at 6,400 mg; however, this absurdly high amount can hardly be reached even with high-dose capsule supplements (one would have to swallow the contents of half a can at once to reach more than 6,000 mg). In fact, Turkesterone seems to be free of side effects.

Scientific findings about Turkesterone

Although the various forms of ecdysterone have been known in the fitness scene since the 1980s, corresponding supplements initially played only a minor role on the sports nutrition supplement market. Until 2019: In that year, the popularity of Turkesterone skyrocketed; a real hype was created that continues to this day. The trigger for this was that WADA again put the active ingredient ecdysterone to the test in 2019. It commissioned a human study at the Free University of Berlin to again thoroughly examine the effectiveness of ecdysterone in terms of performance enhancement. Result: ecdysterone has been shown to contribute to performance enhancement and promote an increase in muscle mass.

The 2019 WADA study

In the study (2019: Isenmann et al., Ecdysteroids as non-conventional anabolic agent), athletes were administered a turkesterone-containing supplement during a ten-week strength training program. The athletes were divided into three groups: The first group received 12 mg of ecdysterone daily, the second group 48 mg and the third group a placebo. In the end, the Turkesterone groups were found to have significantly greater strength gains compared to the placebo group, as well as a significant increase in muscle mass. Specifically, the 12-mg group increased bench press strength by an average of just under 10 kg (maximum test) and the 48-mg group by about 8.5 kg. The placebo group did not achieve any significant increase in strength.

Criticism of the study

Although this was a scientific study not commissioned by a supplement manufacturer, the study design was unfortunately flawed. There were three major criticisms:

1. no power homogeneity.

The strength performances of the participants were variable at the beginning of the study. One must assume that those participants with higher power were already closer to their genetic limit and therefore could not make large power jumps. This could explain why the 48 mg group had a lower average strength increase than the 12 mg group.

2. no control of diet

Although participants had been instructed not to change their diet, this was not checked. There was also no recording of individual caloric intake.

3. no neutral source of raw materials

Unlike usual in scientific studies, no controlled raw materials were used in the supplementation; instead, an already commercially available Turkesterone supplement from the PEAK company was administered. This was analyzed by laboratory techniques only afterwards. It turned out that the ecdysterone concentration was lower than indicated on the label.

Why is Turkesterone not considered a doping agent?

In view of the clear study result - despite all the study design flaws - the question arises as to why turkesterone or ecdysterone has not yet been classified as a doping substance by WADA. There are two main reasons for this:

Natural occurrence

Effective ecdysteroids occur in natural foods in such large quantities that the threshold value for performance enhancement can be reached simply by eating forced vegetables - and eating vegetables can hardly be forbidden to athletes. Spinach, for example, contains up to 5 milligrams of ecdysterone per 100 grams (depending on the texture of the leaves). So a pound of spinach a day could provide a significant performance boost. Other foods that contain ecdysteroids include asparagus, white mushrooms, and quinoa.

Too little data

Data from just one controlled study is not enough to classify a substance as a doping agent. While there have been many other studies prior to the 2019 study that have found ecdysterone to have a performance-enhancing effect, but these were either not human studies or the study design was even more questionable than the study design of the WADA study. However, it is likely that more studies will follow in the coming years. It is also possible that the classification of turkesterone as a non-banned performance-enhancing drug will be re-evaluated.

Intake and dosage

If you want to buy Turkesterone, you naturally want to know how much Turkesterone you need daily. However, this question is not so easy to answer. Depending on which study you refer to, the recommendation for achieving an anabolic effect ranges from 12 mg daily in total to 5 mg daily per kg of body weight (= 450 mg for a 90 kg athlete). Most bodybuilders use 400-800 mg daily. And how long should you supplement turkesterone? At least 4 weeks. If the duration of use is less than 4 weeks, no significant progress can be made; 8 weeks is better. But: if no effect is apparent after 4 weeks, the Turkesterone product used is definitely inferior.

Buying Turkesterone: What to look for?

The number of ecdysterone preparations on the market is enormous - but are all preparations equally good? No. Turkesterone has not yet been standardized, which means that the content of effective ecdysteroids can vary. Only beta ecdysterone is standardized, but here, too, the standardization varies between 95 % and 15 %, depending on the product. Our recommendation: 40% standardization should be the minimum. Since hardly any supplement manufacturer extracts the ecdysterone raw material themselves (almost all manufacturers buy the raw material from Chinese, Russian or Indian raw material traders), unfortunately no general purchase recommendation can be made regarding the quality. An indication is at least the price: prices of significantly less than 20 EUR per monthly package (with at least 400 mg/day) indicate a product of inferior quality. In any case, you won't find any dumping-price turkesterone preparations in our store - we only sell quality products from renowned manufacturers.

Conclusion

For followers of clean weight sports, trying Turkesterone is practically a must - what have you got to lose? Turkesterone doesn't cost the earth, but possibly catapults performance and muscle building forward at express speed. The study situation is finally clear: Turkesteron works! If you want to go all out as a natural athlete, combine the Turkesteron intake with the following ergogenic substances or products:
