What is Gaba?

Gaba is an abbreviation for "gamma amino butyric acid".

Gamma amino butyric acid is a non-proteinogenic amino acid. In plain language, it is an amino acid that the organism cannot use to build protein. Nevertheless, Gaba plays a crucial role in the human body - namely as a calming neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS)!

Gaba is a natural substance because your body is capable of producing gamma-amino-butyric acid on its own. Gaba is formed from the non-essential amino acid glutamate - in the pancreas and in the brain. The speed of gaba synthesis depends on the enzyme L-glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD).

The fact that gaba formation takes place in two places in your body at the same time is related to the so-called blood-brain barrier. The neurotransmitter is not able to overcome this "obstacle".

The blood-brain barrier is a kind of membrane that serves to protect your brain. This device of your body has the purpose of protecting your brain from harmful substances that can circulate in the blood.

Which food contains gaba?

Gaba is found in direct form in only a few foods. Fermented foods such as green or black tea, yogurt, and kefir provide gaba in its original form.

However, foods that contain the "precursors" of gaba can also help. These include L-tryptophan, serotonin or glutamate. To help your body produce gaba, you can add the following foods to your diet:

  • Bananas
  • Broccoli
  • Oats
  • Almonds
  • Whole grain products
  • Walnuts

How does Gaba work?

The mechanisms of action of Gaba are different. Basically, it can be said that the amino acid acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. There, the neurotransmitter transmits, amplifies and controls the signal transmission between the nerve cells.

Basically: neurotransmitters can have both excitatory (e.g. adrenaline or dopamine) and inhibitory effects. The latter is the case with Gaba, as certain signals in the brain are blocked, thus reducing the excitability of the nerve cells. For this reason, gaba is also called an inhibitor. This is a substance that slows down, inhibits or even prevents one or more chemical, biological or physical reactions.

The calming and relaxing effect occurs due to a slowed down stimulus effect on your nerve cells. In this context, it is interesting to note that low levels of Gaba have been found in people with depression. (1)

Incidentally, Gaba is bound to the Gaba receptors, which are transmembrane proteins in nerve cells. Different gaba receptors are distinguished. Gaba A receptors are located in both the brain and the spinal cord and are known to be the most important inhibitory receptor in the central nervous system (CNS). They are not only involved in sleep, but also in the coordination of movement processes.

Buying Gaba: For whom is the neurotransmitter suitable?

Taking Gaba is not only suitable for athletes who are interested in performance and muscle building. Rather, Gaba is interesting for all people who want to optimize their regeneration or suffer from lack of drive or a depressed mood

First, however, interesting study results for all strength athletes who are interested in maximum training results: Scientists were able to determine that Gaba significantly improved the release of growth hormones during and after strength training. (2) Since Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is one of the most important hormones for muscle building, these results sound very interesting. However, in order to be able to prove an effect beyond doubt from these indications, further studies are necessary.

However, Gaba is taken by most people with other goals in mind. Users hope for more relaxation and better sleep by taking gamma amino butyric acid.

Supplementation with Gaba is therefore often taken by people who are struggling with the following problems:

  • Increased anxiety
  • High stress level
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Increased irritability
  • Increased nervousness

And indeed, corresponding indications of a helpful effect can be found in scientific studies. In one study it was found that taking Gaba not only led to more relaxation, but also alleviated anxiety. The test persons who were given Gaba also showed better immunity under stressful conditions. (3)

Also of interest: In the parieto-occipital cortex, low GABA concentration is not only associated with poorer sleep quality, but also with greater depressive symptomatology. (4) Despite the positive indications, further studies are necessary to clearly prove corresponding effects and correlations.

Dosage form: Which Gaba is the best?

Products that contain Gaba are available in different dosage forms. Usually you can choose between capsules, powder and tea. Most products are available in capsule form. Gaba capsules offer the advantage that you can take them quickly, easily and anywhere. You only need some liquid to supply your body with Gaba.

However, some people have problems swallowing capsules. In these cases, the other dosage forms are a good choice. Gaba powder is perfect to dissolve in water or other drinks. Another advantage of Gaba in powder form is that you can determine the dosage yourself. This is only possible to a limited extent with capsules, since the capsule content determines the dosage steps. This circumstance also means that you should be very careful with the dosage to avoid overdosing. Vegans:inside should make sure that the capsule shell is not made of gelatin. In this category you will find some Gaba capsule products that are 100% vegan.

In addition, there is still the possibility to take Gaba as tea. Since Gaba tea (Gabaron) is usually not sold in tea bags but in loose form, you need tea accessories. Otherwise, you will not be able to prepare it.

In addition, you need to steep the tea for a few minutes. The preparation and ingestion of Gaba as a powder or in capsules is therefore associated with more effort. In addition, you can only take a limited amount of Gaba with Gaba tea, which makes higher dosages more difficult. Another disadvantage of tea in the evening - the typical time to take the neurotransmitter - is that you may have to go to the bathroom at night. You can avoid this problem with Gaba capsules, for example.

When should Gaba ideally be taken?

Gaba is ideally taken as a dietary supplement in the evening before bedtime. Around 10 - 20 minutes before going to bed. In order to develop an optimal effect, the intake should take place on an empty stomach if possible. The capsules should always be taken with sufficient water.

Dosage: How much Gaba should I take?

Generally, you should follow the dosage instructions on the label of your product. Usually, Gaba is taken in an amount between 1 - 3 g per day. In the beginning, you may want to start with a lower dosage to see how your body reacts to the neurotransmitter.

How can I recognize a Gaba deficiency?

A deficiency of gaba primarily affects the brain. If too little Gaba is present, a permanently excited state can be the result.

The following symptoms may indicate a gaba deficiency:

  • inner restlessness
  • increased nervousness
  • anxiety or panic attacks
  • increased irritability
  • insufficient ability to concentrate
  • sleep problems
  • headaches
  • muscle cramps

Are there any side effects?

Before you buy Gaba, you should be informed about possible side effects and interactions.

If Gaba is taken in too high doses, this can result in fatigue and drowsiness. Caution is advised when antidepressants are administered (e.g. for the treatment of depression). Since interactions are possible here, Gaba should not be taken without consulting the attending physician. Adverse interactions may also occur when taking sleeping pills and/or tranquilizers.
